This week we’re reading the third and final installment in Kate Jacob’s series, The Friday Night Knitting Club, for our Fiber Arts Fiction Friday post. Knit The Season wraps up the stories set in New York City at the Walker and Daughter yarn shop.
Synopsis (Story Details Below, But No Major Spoilers)
The winter holidays are just around the corner, and for Dakota Walker there’s no better place to be than New York City. This holiday season is feeling a bit different, however, as Dakota has grown from a young teenager from The Friday Night Knitting Club to a young adult who is struggling to understand her place in the world. She’s working toward her dreams of becoming a pastry chef, continuing to build her relationship with her father, working part-time at the yarn store she inherited from her mother, and continuing her friendship with the women of the Friday Night Knitting Club.
Dakota has also found two things that belonged to her mother: her journal and a partially completed turquoise sweater. Much of Knit The Season consists of excerpts from Georgia’s journal, allowing her to continue to tell her story even though she passed away. Dakota learns from the journal that the sweater was a work in progress that her mother started, stopped, and started again, intending it as a present for Dakota’s father, James. Dakota vows to complete the project and give the gift to James for Christmas.
Dakota struggles with finding a balance between wanting to put in the hard work that she knows will get her closer to her professional goals with meeting familial obligations over the holidays. She doesn’t regret her choices, however, and ends up in Scotland with the entire Walker clan to celebrate.
The other members of the Friday Night Knitting Club are keeping busy on their own! Peri, who’s been running the knitting shop after Georgia’s death, has finally seen her line of pocketbooks reach success and has to decide how to move her brand forward. Anita, Dakota’s adoptive grandmother and long-time employee of the store, is finally marrying her beau despite the continued protests of her youngest son. Catherine, Georgia’s childhood friend, is slowly learning to trust and love again after her tumultuous first marriage.
My Review
This book continued the stories of the original members of the Friday Night Knitting club that we met in the first book. I enjoyed how the author used Georgia’s journal to create flashbacks that filled in some of the details from Georgia’s life, including her relationship with James. Some of the plot points felt a little bit predictable and contrived, but overall I enjoyed reading this book. It was a fun, light-hearted read that wrapped up the series with a perfect Christmas bow.
Final Thoughts
If you enjoyed the first two books in this series, The Friday Night Knitting Club and Knit Two, then I definitely recommend reading Knit The Season to complete the trilogy. It’s a fast read and a nice way to wrap up the legacy that Georga Walker left behind with her shop, her daughter, and of course, the members of the Friday Night Knitting Club.
