I love the tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions. During the time between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the internet is full of hopeful people talking about their plans for the new year. The energy is palpable in this magical week where people believe in themselves and in each other. So, I’m diving into the new year energy, while still keeping in mind that: goals can be set any time (not just January 1), life loves to throw us curveballs, and our best is all we can ever do.
Planning for an Intentional Sewing Year
Like most quilters I know, it feels like there is no limit to either the number of unfinished quilts/sewing projects that I have OR the number of new projects I want to start! As I thought about what I wanted to accomplish in 2024, I looked through my list of UFOs and identified a few that I’m eager to work on and finish up. I also looked through my pattern collection to see what projects I’d like to get started on soon!
I also spent some time thinking about what kinds of goals I wanted to set, and how I’d track both success and progress. For 2024, I’ve decided to set and track my goals in two different ways:
- Finishing a set number of items. I know what a “finish” looks like for each stage of quilting, so this will be easy to count.
- Tracking hours spent using a specific skill. I’ll track in 15-minute increments to make it easy to track.
I’m NOT deciding what exact projects I’ll be working on this year. I have a rough idea in my head and I know which one I’m going to work on first, but after that first finish I’ll look through everything and see what project calls to me!
Quilting and Sewing Goals for 2024
- Finish piecing at least five quilt tops. There can be either full-sized quilts or smaller projects, such as table runners or wall hangings.
- Quilt at least five quilt tops. These can also be full-sized quilts or smaller projects. I’d like to do at least one small piece by hand, probably one of my English Paper Pieced projects. For the others, I’ll use my Bernina Q20 midarm.
- Use my Q20 for at least 50 hours, tracking all practice and quilting time.
