For today’s Fiber Art Fiction Friday we’re taking our first foray into a different fiber art: knitting! For me, knitting is a great way to do “hand work” (as compared to sewing machine work) that gives my fingers a break from my favorite English paper-piecing. Let’s dive into The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs.
Synopsis (Story Details Below, But No Major Spoilers)
Georgia Walker has her hands full running a knitting store in New York City while also raising a teenage daughter on her own. As a successful businesswoman, she knows the importance of diversifying the services she offers and is delighted when a new client calls to request a custom knitted gown! At the same time, a group of regular knitters has begun meeting at the shop on Friday nights and before Georgia knows it the Friday Night Knitting Club is born!
Just when Georgia’s life doesn’t feel like it’s bursting at the seams, the estranged father of her child suddenly reappears, looking to finally play a role in his daughter’s life. Georgia struggles not only with her own (and unexpected!) feelings for her ex, but also with how to allow her daughter the chance to know her father.
The ladies of the Friday Night Knitting Club quickly form a tight bond, with each member helping the others in a different way. They welcome newcomers with open arms, even when the new members don’t knit (yet!). They face challenges together, and support each other through the twists and turns of life.
My Review
The women who make up the Friday Night Knitting Club truly define what it’s like to have a group of friends who can be counted on through thick and thin. When any one member faces a challenge, the other members of the group are there to support them; the more they help each other the stronger they each become.
Despite this story of an amazon sisterhood of women, this book was also a challenging read due to an incredibly sad plot twist. While I don’t want to give away too many details here, let’s just say that I cried. A lot. If you’re in a vulnerable state of mind, this might not be the right time to read this book. But if you can brave the tragedy, you’ll long to be a member of the Friday Night Knitting Club yourself.
Final Thoughts
Books that have depressing plot twists can be hit or miss for me, and although I did cry a lot while reading this book, I also laughed out loud quite a few times too. As an aspiration tale of the bonds of friendship that can form between women, this book is amazing. Although not all stories have the happy ending we’d like, sometimes the endings turn out to be just as amazing.
