Welcome to another Fiber Arts Fiction Friday! This week’s book is the third novel in Arlene Sachitano’s Harriet Truman/Loose Threads mystery series: Quilt As You Go.
Synopsis (Story Details Below, But No Major Spoilers)
The quilter’s of the Loose Thread Quilt Guild are hard at work creating reproduction quilts for Foggy Point, Washington’s Civil War reenactment. The proceeds from the quilts and other sewn goods that are sold at their sutler’s booth will go towards charity, so all of the quilters are hard pressed to finish as many quilts possible before the event begins.
The day of the enactment dawns, and everything seems to go off without a hitch. Harriet Truman, professional longarmer and member of the Loose Threads, has finished her shift at the booth and joined some of the other quilters to watch the final battle from the bleachers. The faux-fight ends and the reenactors begin leaving the field, but Harriet notices one of them isn’t getting up.
She and fellow Loose Thread Mavis climb down from the bleachers to investigate, only to discover that the person they spotted from above is dead. Even worse, he’s someone near and dear to them who was believed to have been dead for years! Mavis goes into shock and Harriet quickly calls for help for both Mavis and the dead body. When the paramedics arrive it quickly becomes clear that this wasn’t a natural death and soon the police have officially labeled it a murder.
As always, Harriet becomes entwined in solving the mystery of who killed the man in the field. As she investigates, other strangers appear in Foggy Point including a man who claims to be courting one of the youngest Loose Threads members, Carla. Harriet and the other quilters realize that it’s up to them to determine who this strange man really is, what he’s doing in Foggy Point, and how everything connects back to the murder victim.
My Review
This is another great read in the Harriet Truman/Loose Thread mystery series! It was fun to read about how the quilters prepared for the reenactment in terms of the patterns and materials that they chose. I appreciate the author’s research on Civil War reenactments, and enjoyed the attention to detail for the civil war reenactment. As an avid reader, I also enjoyed learning a new word: sutler (a person who followed an army and sold goods to the soldiers).
With this third book in the series I feel like I’m really starting to know not only the Loose Threads, but also the other citizens and businesses of Foggy Point. Harriet’s return to the town where she grew up provides a great avenue to “meet” everyone as Harriet (guided by her Aunt Beth) really settles into her new hometown.
Final Thoughts
Quilt As You Go was a fun quilting fiction book that continued to tell Harriet’s story. While she always seems to be just one step away from serious trouble, her friends are also always there to support her no matter what.
