Today for Fiber Arts Fiction Friday we’re returning to the world of Alex Bailey in Kathryn Mykel’s fourth book in her cozy mystery series: Threading Trouble.
Synopsis (Story Details Below, But No Major Spoilers)
Following another clue left behind by Nona, Alex has left her beloved Spruce Street and headed south to Mishap, Georgia. There Alex, Charlotte, and of course Kibbles the dog, find a community theater and a mysterious house. They slowly unravel more details about Nona’s secret past, and learn more about Alex’s own parents in the process.
Meanwhile, the theater company is preparing for their performance when the unthinkable happens and the lead actor is found dead! As always, Alex, and now Charlotte, put on their sleuthing hats and work with a local detective to solve the mystery. Despite the tragedy, the show must go on and Charlotte soon finds herself on-stage. She narrowly misses disaster from a swinging sandbag, and they all slowly come to realize that someone is still after Alex!
The more of Nona’s secrets that Alex and Charlotte learn, the more they realize how little they truly knew about the day-to-day of Nona’s life. They continue to thread more clues together, but the more questions they ask the more new ones they have.
My Review
I was really happy that this book answered a lot of the unknown mysteries from book #3, Pressing Matters. While I’m sure that more surprises from Nona await Alex (and Kibbles!) in books four and five, this book really did bring many of the pieces together.
There was a little bit less quilting in this book than any of the first three. Quilting is touched on much more lightly, although there is a wonderful description of the most brilliant and state-of-the art quilting studio that one could ever imagine! One of my favorite “quilty” parts of the book is when Alex sees the statue of Nona outside of the community theater, and realizes that it depicts Nona making none other than Alex’s own graduation quilt. It was a poignant moment for Alex, and a good tie back into the quilting theme.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve enjoyed the first three books in this cozy quilting mystery series from Kathryn Mykel then you’ll definitely want to read Threading Trouble. I remain impressed at all of the secrets Nona kept, and can’t wait to see what Alex discovers next when she returns to Spruce Street in the next installment: Stitching Concerns.
