Today we’re diving into a brand new (to me) quilting fiction series for Fiber Arts Fiction Friday: The Harriet Truman/Loose Threads Mystery series by Arlene Sachitano. The first book in this series is Quilt as Desired!
Synopsis (Story Details Below, But No Major Spoilers)
Harriet Truman has just returned to Foggy Point, Washington, from Oakland, California, to keep an eye on Aunt Beth’s longarming business while she’s off on a cruise! Upon arrival, Harriet is shocked to learn that Aunt Beth has actually turned the business and house over to her! Harriet isn’t quite sure what to make of this, so she decides to just keep herself busy with the piles of quilts that need to be finished before the upcoming Tacoma Quilt Show.
Unfortunately, trouble finds Harriet before she’s even had the chance to settle in. First, finds her Aunt Beth’s best friend, Avanell Jalbert murdered. Then her quilting studio is broken into and trashed! The lumps keep coming as Harriet is attacked several times by an unknown assailant and for an unknown reason! Someone clearly thinks Harriet has something they want, but Harriet has no ideas as to what that could be.
Luckily, the women of the Loose Threads quilting guild have welcomed Harriet back to Foggy Point with open arms and are there for her throughout. While some of them are more gracious than others, Harriet realizes how lucky she is to have returned to a community where she is valued and loved. She sometimes struggles with this love, especially when she attracts the attention of not one, but two male suitors! As a widow, Harriet isn’t sure she’s ready to start dating again but that doesn’t keep the men from trying.
Harriet starts to piece together parts of the mystery, and eventually discovers the secret that has kept putting her in harm’s way. After a harrowing final adventure, the mystery is solved and Harriet is once again safe.
My Review
I was delighted by this first quilting fiction book in the Harriet Truman/Loose Threads mystery series! One can’t help but feel for Harriet; she arrives in Foggy Point and immediately discovers that she’s been given ownership of a business and a house, but those things end up putting her in immediate danger. She ends up taking more trips to the emergency room in one book than I have taken in my whole life!
I really liked that this book’s setting was focused on a longarm quilting business! It’s such a unique setting for a quilting book that is different from many other novels that are set in quilt shops or guilds. Although Harriet does spend a good chunk of time in Foggy Point’s own local quilt shop, it’s not the central location to the story.
Final Thoughts
There are 13 books in this Harriet Truman/Loose Threads mystery series, and I’m looking forward to reading (and reviewing) each one of them. I was also pleased to discover that Arlene Sachitano has a newer series that’s knitting themed! I’ve added the first one, Double Knit: A Permelia O’Brien Mystery Book to my “to be read” list, so keep an eye out for that in a future knitting fiction post for Fiber Arts Fiction Friday!
